Promote ownership of the project’s effect 2: “Local authorities participate in monitoring gold panning management in line with their communal charters, improve service provision and benefit from increased income through co-construction with communal players”. This was the main objective of the workshop held in Ziniar\u00e9 on October 11 and 12, 2022, which brought together communal players from the project’s phase 1 intervention zones. The project covers: the communes of Absouya (Kougp\u00e9l\u00e9 site), Mogt\u00e9do (Nobsin site) and M\u00e9guet (Tamgpipelse site) in the Plateau Central region; the communes of Dassa (N\u00e9biah site), R\u00e9o (Guido site) and Pouni (Kiekouyou site) in the Centre-Ouest region. <\/p>\n\n

The group work analyzed the baseline and target values for the indicators, the map of local governance players in the small-scale and artisanal mining (EMAPE) sector, and the role of the local authorities in this sector.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n

The workshop was attended by 25 participants, including the 6 presidents of special delegations, accountants and heads of departments responsible for revenue mobilization. At the workshop, participants were briefed on the project’s overall objective, and its expected outcomes and results. Group work analyzed the baseline and target values of the indicators, the map of local governance players in the small-scale and artisanal mining (EMAPE) sector, and the capacity-building needs of players in the field. All this should contribute to achieving the project’s overall objective, which is to: “to promote responsible gold mining at gold panning sites in Burkina Faso, so that players in the gold production chain enjoy better services and working conditions, contribute to local development by paying their taxes, and commit to reducing the negative effects of the sector”. <\/p>\n\n

The project is financed by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation in Burkina Faso and implemented in synergy with the Agence Nationale d’Encadrement des Exploitations Mini\u00e8res Artisanales et Semi m\u00e9canis\u00e9es (ANEEMAS) and a consortium of NGOs comprising Caritas Switzerland as lead partner, Solidar Suisse and Artisanal Gold Council (AGC). Phase 1 of project implementation is scheduled for 2023-2027, with a participatory planning phase from July to December 2022. <\/p>\n\n

Present at the opening ceremony, Mr. Dieudonn\u00e9 R. ZAONGO, Country Representative of Solidar Suisse, a member of the Consortium, thanked the participants for their interest and expressed the wish to leave this workshop with indicators selected in a participative manner, relevant recommendations and a commitment to the successful operationalization of the project.<\/p>\n\n
