“Give blood to save lives”. Burkina Faso’s health authorities regularly make this appeal. In these special times of 2023, when dengue fever and malaria are rampant and the need for blood to help the sick is recurrent, the Solidar Suisse Burkina Faso mutual is mobilizing for a good cause. This blood donation operation took place at the Centre Régional de Transfusion Sanguine de Ouagadougou in Tengandogo on November 30, 2023.
The blood donation operation is a first in the life of the Solidar Suisse Burkina Faso mutual. Those in charge of the mutual initiated the activity in view of the current health context, where dengue fever and malaria are hitting many people hard. In the particular case of dengue fever, the situation is very worrying after the government declared an epidemic between late September and early October 2023. This situation is considerably increasing the demand for blood for transfusion purposes, in health facilities, in order to save the lives of patients at risk.
Around 20 people, led by the country representative of Solidar Suisse Burkina Faso, rallied round the Centre Régional de Transfusion Sanguine in Ouagadougou to perform this noble, life-saving gesture. The center’s representatives were very appreciative of the approach taken by the Solidar Suisse Burkina Faso mutual in this difficult period due to malaria and, above all, the increase in cases of dengue fever. According to official figures, from January1, 2023 to week 43, health regions across the country recorded 34,687 probable cases of dengue fever and 349 deaths. The infected Aedes aegypti mosquito transmits the disease.
