On the occasion of World Day Against Child Labor, celebrated every June 12, Ocades Caritas Burkina / Dédougou (local partner), organized a commemorative ceremony on May 27, 2023. During the ceremony, pupils from the BOUCLE DU MOUHOUN region sent an advocacy message to political decision-makers and cotton producers, using a sketch and red cards to denounce the worst forms of child labor in the cotton fields and encourage children to go to school.
This ceremony is part of the implementation of the PATEC project (Promotion of the abandonment of child labor in cotton fields in Burkina Faso), implemented by Solidar Suisse in partnership with OCADES/Dédougou and OCADES/Banfora in the Boucle du Mouhoun and Cascades regions.
To combat child labor in the cotton fields, the project trains cotton growers in the manufacture of organic fertilizers and pesticides, and finances income-generating activities for mothers of children working in the cotton fields, the profits from which are used to recruit adult labor for the cotton fields.
