Climatic shocks, difficulties in accessing factors of production and the security crisis, with its corollary of forced and hasty displacement, loss or abandonment of animals and limited access to land, have increased the vulnerability of agroforestry households and IDPs (in the North and Boucle du Mouhoun regions).

To reverse this trend, early recovery actions and appropriate solutions are needed to guarantee their sustainability. Among the many actions developed by the RESICOM project is the promotion of sheep fattening through vocational training in good practices for young people and very poor households, as well as the provision of small ruminants.

After a year of capacity-building for young people and very poor households in the practice of sheep fattening, some model beneficiaries are showing satisfactory results. Here are a few testimonials.

“My name is Haoua SAWADOGO, I’m a 45-year-old mother of 06 children from the village of Songa (Rambo commune). Thanks to the RESICOM project, I benefited from two (02) rams that I fattened for 01 year. On the occasion of Tabaski 2023, I was able to obtain the sum of 245,000 FCFA by selling my 02 rams from the first sheep fattening cycle (one at 125,000 FCFA and the other at 120,000 FCFA). I’m very happy to have achieved this result. With this money I’ll be able to buy 02 young rams to start my second fattening cycle. The rest of the money will be used for the family’s daily needs.

At the end of her first cycle of sheep fattening, Haoua SAWADOGO, obtained the sum of 245,000FCFA by selling her 02 rams on the occasion of the Tabaski feast.

“I’m Abdoul Wahab OUEDRAOGO, a young farmer from the village of Pouima (Gourcy department, Zondoma province). Thanks to the RESICOM project, on May 02, 2023 I took part in a training session on good sheep fattening practices. Through this training, I learned that to guarantee the well-being of the rams and stimulate their rapid development, you need to diversify their feed (with grass, bran, bean and groundnut leaves, and make them drink enough water). Also, to prevent disease, sheep must be vaccinated regularly and their pens kept clean. At the end of the training course, I received a kit comprising 02 rams, a wheelbarrow, a wire fence, a bucket, a 50kg bag of cakes and a lickstone. Thanks to the knowledge I’ve acquired and the kit I’ve received, I can take better care of my rams: they don’t get sick and they grow well. ”

“My name is Azèta OUEDRAOGO, I’m a 42-year-old widow with 04 children in the village of Mako (Gourcy department). I benefited from 02 rams from the RESICOM project. After 03 months of fattening, I’ve already sold one of the rams for 75,000f. This money was used to buy a young ram, to buy school supplies for my 02 children and to meet my family’s daily needs. Through this first positive experience, I am aware that sheep fattening is a beneficial activity that contributes to strengthening my livelihood. I’d like to thank the RESICOM project for its support, and I intend to apply myself even more, as this is a sustainable income-generating activity that will enable me to improve my family’s living conditions”.
