In Burkina Faso, according to the results of the 5th General Population and Housing Census (RGPH, 2019) 77.9% of the population is under 35, and 4 out of 5 people depend on agriculture for their livelihood. However, monetary poverty and food insecurity among producers remain. This is partly due to low agricultural production and yields, weak marketing channels and difficult access to financing. To change this situation, Solidar Suisse encourages agricultural entrepreneurship in order to increase the productivity of market garden crops, boost the sale of produce and thus improve producers’ incomes. Generally speaking, agricultural production depends on a number of factors, such as climatic conditions, farming techniques, the level of equipment used by producers, the use of selected seeds and fertilizers, the system for supervising producers, the integration of agriculture into the market, the level of organization of producers, and access to financing. To this end, Solidar Suisse is carrying out various actions to improve the technical and financial capacities of producers through the transfer of new sustainable technologies, market gardening production techniques based on agroecology, marketing techniques, infrastructures and appropriate equipment for the conservation and processing of produce.
