About the approach

The Intensive Literacy Training of 9 to 15 year-olds for Development (AFI-D) approach has been set up in response to the lack of suitable educational provision for rural young people who are not in school or are excluded from the education system and exposed to rural exodus. This is a non-formal education program for teenagers, recognized and validated by the French Directorate for Educational Research and Innovation (DGREIP). Operators who implement AFI-D receive support from the Fonds pour l’Alphabétisation et l’Education Non Formelle (FONAENF). To do so, they must sign a memorandum of understanding with Solidar Suisse, the promoting organization.

Objectives

  • help accelerate the education of young people aged 9 to 16 by reducing training time and considerably increasing success rates;
  • build bridges between the formal and non-formal education systems to enable young people who are not in school or who drop out early to catch up on their schooling;
  • establish a close link between the act of learning and the act of producing, through theoretical and practical training in promising trades;
  • promote national languages and culture ;
  • provide opportunities for early school leavers and/or young people not attending school to pursue general secondary education or vocational training;
  • contribute to increasing the school enrolment rate in Burkina Faso ;
  • contribute to the fight against poverty by integrating young people into the socio-economic fabric…
