In West Africa, the livestock sector is booming due to the growing demand for animal products and the multiple roles it plays in the social, economic and environmental spheres. However, on family farms, livestock production does not make a sufficient contribution to supplying the market with meat and milk, generating farm income or producing services (animal traction, organic manure, savings).
This is particularly the case in Burkina Faso, despite the fact that livestock farming contributes a significant share of gross domestic product (18%), is practised by over 80% of the farming population, and represents one of the main activities for diversifying and securing the income of family farms. One of the reasons for this is the absence or inadequacy of advisory support from technical services to producers at the design and preparation stages, as well as the control of feed during the implementation of their family livestock project.
To remedy this situation, Solidar Suisse, through a variety of projects, is building producers’ capacities by providing them with head of livestock, training them in fattening and fattening techniques, and teaching them how to produce organic fertilizer (Bokashi). The ultimate aim is to strengthen the livelihoods of vulnerable populations (young people, women, internally displaced persons) through the promotion of livestock farming.
