About the approach

A solidarity granary is a response by local communities to the effects of climate change, which can lead to cereal deficits and food insecurity for small-scale producers.

The solidarity granary operates on the basis of food loans granted to needy people who have expressed a need. Repayment is also made in foodstuffs.

Objectives

  • Enable poor and vulnerable farming communities to cope with difficult times thanks to the availability of food/seed stocks accessible to everyone.
  • Strengthen solidarity between producers during lean periods and food crises.

Prerequisites for implementing the approach

  • Being a group of growers
  • Membership
  • Have a warehouse or suitable premises for food storage
  • From the same village

Implementation process

  • Informing producers about the initiative;
  • Identification of granary members;
  • Member training on the solidarity granary;
  • Election of Attic Management Committee officers;
  • Training for Attic Management Committee leaders;
  • Organization of General Meetings to draw up and adopt internal regulations;
  • Collecting food from granary members;
  • Provision of food in the form of loans to member and non-member producers (lean season between June and September);
