Agroecology

Through agroecology, Solidar Suisse Burkina Faso contributes to improving the resilience of communities to the effects of climate change and promoting sustainable modes of production and consumption. In practical terms, this involves

• Implementation of activities to restore degraded land: mechanized recovery combined with grass seeding and construction of water and soil conservation/soil defense and restoration (CES/DRS) structures such as Zaï, stone barriers, manure pits, half moons, etc;
• Land degradation prevention activities: CES/DRS, assisted natural regeneration, agroforestry, production and use of bio-inputs;
• Promotion of inclusive and sustainable value chains for non-timber forest products (NTFPs) and non-NTFPs;

The implementation of these initiatives is accompanied by various approaches: HIMO, watershed, community involvement, school fields, etc.

To date, a number of individual producers and members of various farmers’ and socio-professional organizations in Solidar Suisse Burkina Faso’s intervention zones have benefited from support in promoting agroecology. The most remarkable example is that of a cooperative society in the Plateau-Central region, which produces and sells enriched compost following training provided by Solidar Suisse.
